BSBWHS414 - Contribute to WHS risk management


In every workplace, workers are exposed to day to day activities involving some kind of workplace health and safety risk, which needs to be identified and managed. These workplace risks apply to a broad range of roles across all industries and require appropriately trained and equipped employees to identify and manage them.

This training course allows you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required to identify work health and safety (WHS) hazards and assess and control the risk relating to those identified hazards. It involves contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of risk controls according to legislative and organisational requirements.

The skills in this course are applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 6 Hours
Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Hours

Participants must have the physical capability to communicate with a range of people about WHS requirements and compliance. 

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

This certificate does not require renewal

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include: 


Performance tasks and scenarios:

  • Follow and implement a Risk Management Process
  • Identify and assess common workplace hazards and risk control measures
  • Develop a risk control plan
  • Prepare and communicate risk analysis outcomes to WHS committee
  • Contribute to evaluating effectiveness of risk control
  • Conduct a shallow trench risk assessment
  • Complete risk assessment
  • Develop a risk control plan
  • Evaluate effectiveness of risk controls


Documentation – The student must compete all documentation according to the required standard:

  • Risk assessment
  • Risk control plan
  • Action plan for evaluating effectiveness of risk control


Theory assessment -   A written assessment consisting of a case study, short answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
